Legacy Institute

The emblem of the Legacy Institute is intended to always be orientated with the direction of gravity. See iconography below.

The Legacy Institute is an interpolitical society of space explorers, conservationists, and regulators. Established in -12 FA, it is the oldest of societies known as “explorer leagues”. The Legacy Institute has consistently maintained a public-focused directive, openly revealing any sensitive or otherwise notable information they encounter, and may go so far as to become militarily involved in the protection or conservation of anomalies as they see fit. Despite their openness and rhetoric of acting in the best interests of all peoples, there are many who nevertheless mistrust the Institute, believing the information they reveal is merely a front to hide deeper secrets kept locked away.

The Institute’s primary objectives include the documentation of new alien biospheres and analysis on the potential applications of newly discovered exotic variants. They are frequently contracted by various nations to analyze newly reached biospheres and determine their danger or vulnerability to Home-based life. The Institute also conducts its own private investigations concerning its own agenda, openly or secretly pursuing information on a variety of current discoveries.

History

The Legacy Institute was founded in the pre-Foundation era by an intergovernmental panel of nations including the Mekanon Technocracy and the Republic of Sumetrolis. These nations saw the potential danger of society-shifting discoveries harnessed by bad actors. In the years prior to the Institute’s formation, Mekanon had discovered a method to harness and utilize the energons emanating within Jovia’s radiation belt, leading to the development of the first energy weapons. Multiple variants had also been discovered throughout the system in the preceding century that had led to sudden shifts in societal focus.

Meanwhile, there was expectation that rapid interstellar travel would soon be possible, unsealing the gateway to countless new worlds with the potential for powerful new variants, particles, or dangerous lifeforms. With these possibilities looming on the horizon, several governing bodies gathered to establish an institution with the objective of exploring space to document new discoveries and analyze the potential threat these discoveries might pose to civilization, and alert the public at large if necessary.

The Institute has since had a prominent influence on the course of historical events, and continues to maintain a prominence in the present day. They operate throughout the Civil Periphery, maintaining close ties to an enormous variety of societies who are more than pleased to utilize the renowned resources of the Institute. They also have their fair share of enemies, such as those who outright mistrust the Institute or those who hired the Institute for a private sensitive survey and then felt scammed when the Institute felt compelled to publish the findings.

Iconography

The symbol of the Legacy Institute consists of a triangle outline with two solid triangles on its upper two sides. The symbol is to be oriented with the direction of gravity when present.

The central triangle represents the three core principles of the Institute: integrity, knowledge, and preservation, with integrity at the base.

The two outer triangles represent wisdom and obligation, and are extensions of the core concepts they share a side of the central triangle with: wisdom pairs with knowledge, and obligation with preservation.

The central triangle is hollow to depict the vastness of space that remains contained by the core principles. The entire symbol is intended to depict a rough fractal nature to evoke the potential of expansive continuity.
